Italian player Saipem has been awarded the turn-key contract for the A$700 million (US$549.3 million) Stage 5A expansion of Australia’s largest gas transmission pipeline.
The company will be responsible for the design, construction, installation and pre-commissioning of the about 570 kilometres of additional pipe along the existing pipeline.
Work is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.
The entire stage-five expansion, which is divided into three phases, consists of about 1150 kilometres of additional pipeline that is expected to boost capacity by 350 million cubic feet of gas per day. Total estimated cost is about A$1.5 billion.
The big trunkline brings gas from the offshore North West Shelf fields to customers in Western Australia. It has a capacity of about 570 MMcfd of gas, with stage four, due to be completed in January 2007, to add another 94 MMcf.
