Nexus Energy said the semi-submersible drilling rig Songa Venus has spudded the Crux-2 appraisal well in the Browse basin, off north-west Australia.
The well, which, if successful, will be the first of six development wells, lies about two kilometres north-east of the Crux-1 discovery well, which hit a 244 metre gas column in high quality Triassic reservoirs.
Nexus' best estimates of the Crux field's contingent resources are 71 million barrels of condensate and 2 trillion cubic feet of gas
Nexus retains a 100% interest in the condensate in Crux, the proposed Crux liquids project and any other condensate or oil discovered in and extracted from Block AC/P23 on or before 31 December 2020.
Under an agreement, Shell is entitled to take gas from the block before this date provided it does not adversely affect the Crux liquids project.
