By Upstream staff

Petrobras has handed a $645 million, five-year drilling contract Larsen Oil & Gas for the PetroMena-owned newbuild deep-water semi-submersible drilling rig PetroRig 2.

The five-year contract, which starts in December 2009, will see the rig operating in water depths of 2900 metres off Brazil.

'The rig is currently being built at Singapore's Jurong Shipyard.

The job has prompted Larsen and PetroMena to declare the third option to build a similar deep-water semisub at Jurong. This rig will be delivered in teh first quarter of 2010.

Norway's Petrolia Drilling holds a 43.5% stake in PetroMena.
