Banambu Deep disappoints for Woodside

Disappointment: reservoir targets in the Banambu Deep-1 well, off Australia, were found to be water bearing

Woodside Petroleum has hit a setback in the drilling of the Banambu Deep-1 well in the Carnarvon basin, off Western Australia, after the reservoir targets were found to be water bearing.

Well partner Cue Energy Resources said the well had reached a total depth of 4696 metres within the Mungaroo formation.

Both primary and secondary reservoir objectives were intersected and wireline logs were obtained, however Cue added the fluvial sandstone units were found to be water bearing in both target intervals.

Woodside will now complete the wireline logging programme before plugging and abandoning the well as previously planned.

Cue had previously estimated Banambu Deep to hold a pre-drill potential of up to 1.5 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas.
