Iraq inclusion: Middle Eastern state returns to monthly rig count

The worldwide rig count rose 4.4% last month, with the largest increases being seen in Canada and the Middle East, where Iraq’s rigs were included for the first time in more than 20 years.

There were 3484 active rigs worldwide in June compared to 3335 a month earlier, the latest regular count by Baker Hughes has shown.

Within this total, both Europe and the United States decreased slightly to 115 and 1972 rigs respectively, while Latin America and Asia Pacific also saw declines.

Canada had 227 active rigs in June compared to 133 in May, while the Middle East added 82 rigs to its monthly tally of 400.
