Passed away: Ghana president John Atta Mills reportedly dies

John Atta Mills, president of resource-rich Ghana, has died, according to multiple reports.

The 68-year-old leader of the West African nation died in hospital a few hours after taking ill, according to a BBC report.

"It is with a heavy heart... that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana," BBC quoted a statement from the president’s office as saying.

No other details were immediately available. BBC said Atta Mills had been suffering from throat cancer.

Atta Mills, elected in 2008, led Ghana through an economic boom; the country was the world’s fastest growing economy last year.
