Exports: Statoil is keen to boost LNG deliveries from its Snohvit plant

Statoil appears to be moving towards a decision in favour of building a second train at its Snohvit LNG plant to exploit additional reserves at the Barents Sea field, rather than a new pipeline to the remote Arctic region off Norway, according to a report.

A conceptual decision on an additional train was postponed earlier this summer amid partner disagreement on the economic merits of such an expansion of the plant relative to a proposal for a new gas route that is being promoted by gas infrastructure agency Gassco.

Proponents of the costly 1000-kilometre pipeline, including Oil & Energy Minister Ola Borten Moe and Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Storre, contend it would facilitate exploitation of future discoveries in the frontier Barents play, as well as existing finds such as Skrugard and Havis.
