US rig count grows by one

US rigs: up by one

The number of oil and gas rigs drilling in the US grew by one this week for a total of 1931, according to data from Houston-based services giant Baker Hughes.

Rigs drilling for oil edged up by three for a total of 1432 - a 25-year high and 377 more than a year ago.

Rigs drilling for gas slipped by three to total 495 - a 13-year low and 401 fewer than a year ago.

Louisiana was the big gainer this week, adding four rigs for a total of 122.

North Dakota was not far behind, adding three more rigs to total 192. South Dakota, meanwhile, lost a rig, leaving that state with only one.
