Transocean Legend: the semi-submersible rig has restarted drilling the Boreas-1 well in Western Australia’s Greaten Poseidon region

ConocoPhillips has finally been able to restart drilling in the Greater Poseidon area off Western Australia following a two-and-a-half month wait for Transocean to fix a blowout preventer.

In late May, the BOP on the semi-submersible rig Transocean Legend was pulled for repair after drilling the Boreas-1 exploration well to a depth of 4009 metres.

Several attempts to repair the BOP were unsuccessful, but co-venturer Karoon Gas said today the BOP is fully functional and drilling has resumed.

Boreas-1 is the first of a minimum five exploration wells in the Greater Poseidon area.

ConocoPhillips and Karoon have made three discoveries in the area — Poseidon-1, Poseidon-2 and Kronos-1 – and are aiming to build reserves to underpin a liquefied natural gas project.
