Statoil hits oil at Geitungen

Oil strike: Helge Lund-led Statoil makes Norwegian discovery

Norway's Statoil has made an oil discovery at a prospect well in the country's waters, a partner in the block has revealed.

The Geitungen prospect on production licence 265 has encountered oil and a core sample has been taken, 20% partner in the well Det Norske Oljeselskap said on Friday.

"Drilling operations are ongoing and the final results from the well are thus not yet available," Det Norske continued.

Statoil is the operator of the licence in the Norwegian North Sea. The state-owned oil giant has not as yet made a statement on the discovery.
