US major ConocoPhillips and Australia-listed New Standard Energy have kicked off a three-well drilling programme at the Goldwyer shale project in Western Australia with the spudding of the Nicolay-1 well.

New Standard announced to the Australian Securities Exchange that the MB Century rig 14 was currently drilling ahead to a target vertical depth of about 3450 metres, which was expected to take about 55 days.

Data will be acquired through a combination of full coring throughout the Goldwyer formation (the well’s primary target), mud logging and electric wire line logs.

Information on the secondary targets, the overlying Bongabinni and Nita formations, will also be gathered.
