New drillship arrives in Brazil

Star landing: Drillship to work for Petrobras on six-year gig

Queiroz Galvao Oil and Gas said Monday that one of its newbuild ultra-deepwater drillships, the Amaralina Star, arrived in Brazil this weekend.

The unit and its sister, the Laguna Star, built at Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea, will work for Petrobras on six-year contracts with a six-year option.

“Operating the Amaralina Star, a state-of-the-art ultra-deepwater rig, is a key milestone for the company,” QGOG president Leduvy Gouvea said in a statement.

The unit can work in water depths of up to 10,000 feet and drill wells up to 40,000 feet deep.

A Queiroz Galvao spokeswoman said the Laguna Star is due for arrival in November.
