Pemex sees hit at Trion-1

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said today that state-run oil company Pemex has found evidence of oil while drilling the Trion-1 new-field wildcat in the remote Perdido Fold-belt near the maritime border with the US.

The well, one of the most important Pemex has drilled since expropriation in 1938, detected light crude oil - possibly 2000 metres below the seabed.

The Trion well is located in 2535m of water with objectives in light-oil bearing Paleocene, Lower Eocene and Cretaceous reservoirs, it is understood. Pemex is using the Bicentenario rig.

Pemex has been progressively drilling deeper wells in the Gulf of Mexico for the past decade as part of a strategy to discover new oil reserves.
