Peace talks: Fresh start hoped in Colombia situation

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Colombia’s biggest rebel group, the Farc, have agreed to peace talks, beginning in Oslo next month.

The talks, first announced by President Santos last week, and now confirmed by the Farc, came as a surprise to many Colombians.

But oil sector insiders say the increase in attacks in facilities and personnel in recent months could, with hindsight, be seen as a show of strength in the build up to a new peace process aimed at ending a 48-year old conflict.
