Scarabeo 8 listing due to 'incompetence'

Eni has reportedly concluded that a “lack of competence” was to blame for an incident earlier this month in which the newbuild rig Scarabeo 8 started listing, but denies it posed any risk of a major accident, according to the company’s internal investigation report.

The Saipem rig was earlier reported to have tilted by about 5.7 degrees to starboard after taking in seawater in a ballast tank in the 4 September incident while drilling the Eni-operated Salina wildcat in the Barents Sea.

However, the report from the Italian operator reveals the semi-submersible rig listed by seven degrees and attributes the incident to faulty handling of the unit’s ballast system.

The problem was identified and the situation normalised within 21 minutes, according to the report.
