Suit: Shell sues Greenpeace

Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell is squaring off against Greenpeace International in Dutch court, effectively filing a restraining order against the environmental group.

The lawsuit, filed in Amsterdam's District Court on Friday, asks that Greenpeace activists stay at least 500 metres away from Shell's property or face a €1 million ($1.3 million) fine.

A ruling is expected within two weeks.

Shell, based in The Hague, and Amsterdam-based Greenpeace have been at odds over the supermajor's drilling activities in the Arctic. Shell's $4.5 billion exploration plan off the coast of Alaska has been a particular point of recent contention.
