US supermajor follows Talisman Energy to door on Peruvian pair

US supermajor ConocoPhillips has decided to quit two blocks in Peru’s Maranon Basin where conservation areas were declared over part of the acreage after the licences were awarded.

The move comes just weeks after Canada’s Talisman Energy said it would quit the same blocks and two others in a move to exit Peru altogether, while insisting environmental and community concerns were not behind the decision.

Pressure group Amazon Watch claimed that Talisman Energy did not have the support of indigenous communities at its operated Block 64, which the company denies.
