Leak briefly shuts Trinidad platform

By Upstream staff

Several workers were injured and production was shut down briefly on a platform off Trinidad after a natural gas leak, officials at state-owned company oil Petrotrin said today.

An investigation was underway to determine what caused the release of natural gas on Platform 22 in the Soldado north oilfield, Petrotrin communications manager Arnold Corneal said.

He told Reuters about eight workers employed by contractors affiliated with Petrotrin were taken to a medical facility, treated and discharged.

"The safety system was inadvertently triggered when the natural gas under pressure was released, causing a very sharp sound to be emitted. The persons who were doing maintenance at the time scampered to safety when they heard the release, causing minor injuries," Corneal said.

A police report said the men were working on a pressurised two-inch gas line when the incident occurred.

A manager at Trinmar, a Petrotrin subsidiary, said production was shut down for about an hour, affecting the production of 1000 barrels of oil.
