Norway donates $8.5m to South Sudan oil sector

Norway has committed to provide up to $8.5 million in aid to South Sudan over the next two years under the country’s Oil for Development (OfD) programme.

“South Sudan’s oil revenues can have a great impact on development in this young country,” commented Minister of International Development Heikki Eidsvoll Holmas.

“These revenues must therefore be managed in a sound and transparent way, so that they can benefit the people,” said Holmas.

Thursday’s deal also marks the first formal development co-operation agreement between South Sudan and Norway.

Oslo has already provided South Sudan with expertise in petroleum management, assistance in drawing up legislation, training of oil sector employees and funding for petroleum directorate offices.
