SNC-Lavalin to design Fort Hills upgrader

By Upstream staff

Engineering and construction company SNC-Lavalin said today it has been awarded a contract by Fort Hills Energy to provide engineering design services for Phase I of the secondary upgrader portion of the Fort Hills oil sands project, in Alberta.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

SNC said the engineering design phase will begin immediately, and will be completed by the end of 2007.

The work, to be carried out from SNC's Montreal office, is expected to generate about 100 jobs, Reuters reported.

The Sturgeon upgrader will process bitumen from the Fort Hills mine, 90 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, into synthetic crude, which will be marketed for refining into consumer products such as gasoline and diesel.

Fort Hills Energy is a joint-venture between Petro-Canada, UTS Energy and miner Teck Cominco.
