Let go: Oil workers held captive for more than a year are freed

Three Chinese oil workers and their translator who have been held captive in Colombia for more than a year have reportedly been released by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

Police and officials in capital Bogota have confirmed the hostages were handed over to workers from the Red Cross, reports from Reuters and Dow Jones Newswires have said.

Colombian vice defence minister Jorge Enrique Bedoya credited co-operation with both the Red Cross and the Chinese government for securing the hostages’ freedom.

The quartet were working for a company hired by the UK’s Emerald Energy when they were seized on 9 June 2011 as they rode in a pickup truck near San Vicente de Caguan, Caqueta province.
