Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC) is inviting bids from five international companies for a carbon capture feasibility study, adding that if the project is viable, the carbon dioxide would be used to boost the emirate's oil recovery rate.
ADFEC has asked Foster Wheeler, Technip, Parsons, SNC-Lavalin and Jacobs Engineering to tender for the study, the company said.
The preferred bidder would be selected by the middle of next month and a feasibility study will be completed by the end of this year. The contract value was not disclosed.
The scope of the study is to identify and evaluate options for onshore and offshore carbon dioxide capture from major sources in Abu Dhabi and deliver the gas to oilfield operators for enhanced oil recovery.
The study will also identify the first project to be implemented, on the basis of technical and economic feasibility, and provide a roadmap to develop a comprehensive carbon capture and storage (CCS) network in Abu Dhabi, and potentially link it with similar schemes across the region.
"(CCS) is the most promising technology for the reduction of energy-based carbon dioxide emissions and a viable substitute for the vast amount of natural gas currently re-injected into oil reservoirs for pressure maintenance," ADFEC chief Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber told Reuters.
"This initiative therefore represents an obvious win-win opportunity for the private and public sectors to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the country, increase oil production and maximise natural gas availability."
