Nigerian militants: kidnapping for ransom is a common occurence in the Niger Delta

Four expatriates and two Nigerians working for South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries have been kidnapped in the southern state of Bayelsa, Nigeria, according to local police.

Bayelsa Police Public Relations Officer Fidelis Odunna confirmed the incident to media, saying that armed men had entered the company’s site, which is located in a forest by the Atlantic Ocean beach, to abduct the workers.

According to the Nigeria-focused news agency Sahara Reporters, community sources said the gunmen had invaded the site by speed boat at about 3:30pm on Monday, blindfolded the victims and left as many other oil workers on site had hurried to safety.
