Asha Noor sidetrack 'proves oil'

A sidetrack well drilled at the Asha Noor prospect by German explorer Wintershall has confirmed a small oil discovery, after earlier mixed drilling results, according to a licence partner.

Bridge Energy said the 16/1-16A probe drilled by semi-submersible Bredford Dolphin to further appraise an earlier well had confirmed a good quality reservoir and identified the oil-water contact after being drilled to total depth, with data assessment ongoing.

The company estimates recoverable resources at the discovery on the prospective Utsira High structure in production licence 457 at between 25 million and 35 million barrels of oil equivalent, with further potential upside outside the block.

The initial 16/1-16 well, the first to be drilled on the licence, had struck good quality oil in the Middle Jurassic Hugin and Triassic Skagerrak formations.
