‘No new elections’ in Venezuela

Oil-rich Venezuela will not hold new elections in the event long-term but critically ill leader Hugo Chavez is unable to be sworn in to a new term as president in early January, reports indicate.

The South American Opec nation is due to swear in Chavez on 10 January for another six-year term following his election victory.

However, Chavez, who has led the country since 1999, is currently suffering from a respiratory illness sustained during his fourth round of treatment for cancer.

Venezuela’s constitution states that there must be a re-election within 30 days if there is an “absolute absence” of the president.

The BBC quoted Diosdado Cabello, head of the National Assembly, as saying that would be no fresh election, but that the swearing-in ceremony could be delayed.
