Bourbon builds anchor-handling simulator

By Upstream staff

French marine services company Bourbon has teamed up with the Offshore Simulator Centre in Aalesund to develop two anchor-handling simulators to help train crews for its vessels.

The simulators, now based in France and the Philippines, were designed to recreate conditions on the bridge of a vessel during critical operations, and were suitable for "full mission" training integrating bridge crew with navigators and even winch operators, Bourbon said.

Bourbon said it was using the simulators for special anchor-handling training for tug supply vessel crews. The company said it aimed to standardise training for its crews as working conditions across its fleet became more similar due to its policy of ordering identical ships.

Bourbon said it expected to 4000 seamen by 2010 as part of a $1.6 billion investment in its offshore division.

The anchor-handling training will complement courses in dynamic positioning operations already being offered at Bourbon's training centres in Manila, in the Philippines, and at Marseilles, in France.

The company also said it would operate three dedicated training vessels in its key operations areas of West Africa, Asia and Latin America.
