Russia orders Arctic icebreakers

Ordered: pair of icebreakers for Russia's Arctic waters

Russia has ordered a pair of salvage-and-rescue icebreaker vessels to support Arctic offshore operations in a €150 million ($199 million) deal with German fabrication group Nordic Yards.

The 86-metre vessels are intended for icebreaking in waters with ice up to one metre in thickness and will be equipped to carry out fire-fighting and tackle oil spills at sea.

They will also be capable of carrying out rescue operations at offshore oil and gas fields in harsh environments as well as searching for vessels in distress.

Each of the units will be equipped with a helipad for evacuation operations, with medical facilities onboard to handle evacuated workers.

In addition, the icebreakers will be able to scan the ocean floor to pinpoint damaged objects at water depths of up to 1000 metres.
