Norway 'would not join' gas cartel

By Upstream staff

Norway, the world's third largest natural gas supplier has said it would 'not be natural' for the country to join an organisation of gas-producing countries.

Trude Iversen, a spokesman for Norway's Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, said Norway was not a member of Opec and would not join an Opec-style gas cartel, French news agency Agencie France Presse reported.

Iversen's comments came after a meeting of gas producers in Doha, Qatar, yesterday, where the idea of a "price stablising" body for gas producers was discussed.

Russia said yesterday that the country's had decided to set up a research body to look into the mechanics of pricing in the global gas market.

Today, US Sam Bodman criticised talk of a gas cartel, saying it would harm both consumers and producers.
