TransCanada wins $5bn pipeline deal

TransCanada has secured a $5 billion deal for the Prince Rupert gas transmission project to serve Progress Energy’s Pacific Northwest liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in British Colombia.

The Canadian pipeline giant will design, build, own and operate the gas transmission project in a $5 billion contract from Progress Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia's Petronas since last month's $5.2 billion takeover.

Chief executive Russ Girling said that the contract was the second major win for the company in Western Canada in the past year, coming after Shell hired it in June for the Coastal GasLink pipeline project to serve the proposed Kitimat development.

The 750-mile pipeline is planned to transport natural gas, mostly from the North Montney region…
