Lagos: At least six hurt in tanker fire

A spark during disengagement of the hose after product delivery reportedly caused the fire and explosion that rocked an oil depot in the Nigerian city of Lagos, injuring at least six workers.

The six staff suffered severe burns in the incident at a depot in Tin Can Island operated by MRS Oil & Gas, a Lagos-headquartered downstream, retail and shipping player.

A senior official at the company told All Africa Media that the ST 215 barge had completed delivering products into the terminal it received from a vessel berthed alongside it when the incident occurred on Wednesday morning.

The resulting explosion, which witnesses said sounded like earthquake, shook the whole of Apapa and shattered the windows of the terminal building 50 metres away before engulfing the tanker barge in flames.
