Lund: ‘Algeria standoff could be long-lasting’

Statoil chief executive Helge Lund has said the Norwegian major is “prepared for a long-lasting situation” in Algeria as a group of terrorists continue to hold international oil workers hostage at a gas facility.

A tense standoff between the al-Qaeda-linked group and Algerian forces continues at the gas production plant on In Amenas following the storming of the facility by heavily-armed assailants early on Wednesday morning.

Although many precise details of the situation remain unclear, at least two people were killed, numerous injured and between 20 and 41 taken hostage following a series of connected incidents which first saw a bus carrying Statoil workers ambushed before the gas field was attacked.
