Algeria 'in control of gas site' - report

Algerian troops have moved to end an ongoing siege with Islamist militants at a gas plant after storming the facility packed with hostages, according to reports.

Algerian news service Tout sur l'Algerie has cited a regional official as saying the country's forces are now in control of the gas site following a military operation, although this has not been independently verified.

On Thursday afternoon, Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade confirmed that the sole Irish citizen, a Belfast resident, had made contact with his family "and is understood to be safe and well and no longer a hostage".
