Construction giant Bechtel has landed a front-end engineering and design contract for Mozambique’s first LNG terminal, the company said Friday.

The initial phase of the plant in the Cabo Delgado province will have a capacity for 5 million metric tonnes per year, with future plans to produce 50 million metric tonnes per year.

The plant is planned for a 2018 startup.

"We are excited by the prospect of working with Anadarko and its partners to develop a world-class facility that will bring jobs and economic development to Mozambique," said Jack Futcher, president of the company's oil, gas and chemicals unit.
