Big fine: Sinopec subsidiary gets $1.5 million fine for 2007 deaths

A Canadian subsidiary of Chinese giant Sinopec has been slapped with a C$1.5 million fine for an accident that killed two temporary foreign workers near Fort McMurray in 2007.

The fine against Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Company (SSEC) is the biggest workplace penalty in Alberta and one of the biggest in Canadian history, according to local reports.

"I expect the court is right in its belief that a penalty like this will deter," the CBC quoted Crown prosecutor Marshall Hopkins as saying.

SSEC pleaded guilty in September to three charges of failing to ensure the health and safety of workers at the Horizon Oil Sands project in northern Alberta, operated by Canadian Natural Resources.

A judged forced the company to pay a maximum fine of $500,000 per offense.
