Terrorist target: oil and gas installations in Algeria

Islamist militants are suspected of attacking an oil pipeline in northern Algeria, killing two Algerian guards, in a renewed assault on energy infrastructure after the tragic hostage-taking incident at the In Amenas gas plant, according to a report.

Another seven people were apparently wounded in the pipeline attack on Sunday evening in the Djebahia region, about 70 kilometres east of the capital Algiers, a security source told Reuters.

The region is a stronghold of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)– the group also behind the In Amenas attack - and where its leader Abdelmalek Droukdel is believed to be based.

"In comparison to the In Amenas attack, this is a very minor event," the source said.
