Shell welcomes Nigeria spill ruling

Shell has been found partially responsible for oil pollution in Nigeria in a case brought against the Anglo-Dutch supermajor in the Netherlands by a group of farmers.

The Dutch court did, however, dismiss four out of the five allegations levelled against the oil giant in relation to oil spills in Nigeria in 2004, 2005 and 2007, a move the supermajor welcomed on Wednesday.

Shell was ordered, however, to hand out compensation to one of the four farmers who, together with environmentalist group Friends of the Earth, had filed the suit in 2008 in The Hague, where Shell has its headquarters.
