Off the cards: New World switching gears at Blue Creek despite live oil shows

New World Oil & Gas has said it will plug and abandon its sidetrack to the Blue Creek 2 well, effectively ending its exploration of the B Crest prospect in Belize.

The Blue Creek 2A ST well in the Peten Basin of northwest Belize was drilled to a measured depth of 11,650 feet.  

The AIM-listed junior said that analysis had led to a decision that “insufficient commercial quantities of moveable hydrocarbons were present to merit running casing and well testing operations”.  

The explorer said live oil shows had nonetheless been encountered in the Y3 and Hillbank formations at the prospect, as had been uncovered by the Blue Creek 2 well in November.

The explorer said the well data on both probes pointed to an active hydrocarbon system on Blue Creek.
