Eni in MLE kick-off in Algeria

Start-up: Menzel Ledjmet East gas plant

Eni has started gas production from the Menzel Ledjmet East (MLE) field in Algeria, defying security fears in the wake of a recent deadly terror attack in the North African country.

The Italian giant, which jointly operates the field in Block 405b with Algerian state-owned Sonatrach, has brought MLE online four years after its acquisition of block owner First Calgary Petroleum.

The rich gas plant at the field, located about 1000 kilometres from Algiers, has daily production capacity of 9 million cubic metres of gas, 15,000 barrels of oil and 12,000 barrels of liquid petroleum gas.  

Start-up at the field is set to boost Eni’s equity production from Algeria to 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day this year, after producing 80,000 boepd to make it the country’s leading producer in 2012.
