Ocean Rig lands West Africa drilling gig

Cyprus-headquartered Ocean Rig has entered into agreement with a major oil company to drill at least four wells off West Africa, using its semi-submersible Eirik Raude.

The offshore drilling contractor did not disclose the details of the oil company in an announcement on Tuesday but said the contract was for a firm four-well programme plus options, with an estimated duration of about 12 months.

Ocean Rig has estimated its backlog for the contract to be worth about $217 million, including mobilisation and demobilisation.

The Eirik Raude, which is currently drilling off Liberia for Australian explorer African Petroleum, is scheduled to start this latest contract in the second half of this year after drilling operations in Ireland.
