'No wrongdoing': Christophe de Margerie issues rebuttal in French court

Total chief executive Christophe de Margerie has come out fighting in a court case where he and the company stand accused wrongdoing over the Oil-for-Food scandal in Iraq over 15 years ago.

The charismatic leader of the French supermajor disputed in court that he had any knowledge that Total was buying oil illegally procured under the United Nations programme at the time, Reuters reported.

De Margerie took to the stand in a French court on Tuesday as one of 18 individual defendants in the case. Both he and Total have consistently denied any of the allegations against them.

The chief executive is being questioned in relation to activities during his term as Total’s senior vice president for the Middle East, prior to taking the chief executive role.
