ATP suit: Justice Department pursuing pollution claim

The US Justice Department on Monday filed suit against ATP Oil & Gas, alleging the bankrupt explorer allowed oily wastewater to drip into the Gulf of Mexico accompanies by dispersant to cover the tracks.

The suit seeks injunctive relief and civil fines from the US independent in connection with reports made at a March 2012 inspection at the ATP Innovator in Mississippi Canyon Block 711, about 45 miles off Louisiana.

The infractions were reported by the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and then referred to the Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department, authorities said.

ATP investor contacts did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Upstream.
