Pioneer Resources: US shale production surges

Pioneer Natural Resources swung into the black as productive wells came online amid a fruitful outlook for the coming year, the company said Wednesday.

The company boasted total production of 164,812 barrels of oil equivalent for the quarter, up from 136,699 boepd in the year-ago period.

Fueling the growth in particular were contributions from the horizontal Wolfcamp, Eagle Ford and Barnett combo shales, as well as the vertical Spraberry vertical play.

Pioneer booked net income of $28.8 million in the three months to December, compared to a loss of $111.1 million in the 2011 quarter.

But excluding one-time items, the company earned 83 cents per share, missing analysts' estimate of 87 cents per share, Reuters reported.
