Ecuador’s Correa cruises to new term

Strong support for Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa 's re-election will allow the leader to deepen his populist policies, expand oil and mineral extraction and, many fear, further clamp down on the media in the small Andean nation.

Correa won 57% of the vote compared to 23% for his nearest opponent Guillermo Lasso, a former banker, Dow Jones reported.

The re-election of Correa, who took office in 2007 and is already the country's longest-serving leader in decades, will put him in power for a third term, or four more years.

A significant increase in oil revenue allowed Correa to maintain strong levels of subsidies and public spending to build hospitals, roads and schools, helping him build a robust base of supporters.
