Evacuation: Statoil evacuated the Snohvit LNG plant after a gas leak on the weekend

The liquefied natural gas plant processing gas from the Snohvit field in the Barents Sea off northern Norway remains shut down indefinitely after being evacuated on Saturday due to a gas leak.

The Snohvit LNG plant on the island of Melkoya off Hammerfest had been shut down for maintenance to improve efficiency since the end of January and was due to be restarted when the leak occurred in the cooling system, resulting in the evacuation of 32 personnel at 11:30 GMT.

“We are still working on identifying the exact location of the leak," Statoil spokesman Ola Anders Skauby told Upstream.
