Barnett 'to fuel US gas boom through 2030'

The Barnett shale formation in north Texas will play a central role in the US natural gas boom for a generation, according to a new in-depth report released this week.

However, production in the Barnett peaked last year and will fall by more than half by 2030, said the study, which was conducted by the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) at the University of Texas and funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

The study forecasts a total of 44 trillion cubic feet of recoverable reserves from the Barnett, and sees annual production declining from 2 Tcf per year to about 900 billion cubic feet annually by 2030, assuming a market price of $4 per million British thermal units.
