Bourbon Dolphin probe opens

By Upstream staff

The maritime inquiry into the capsize of the anchor handling tug supply vessel Bourbon Dolphin while it was working at the Rosebank field, west of Shetland, opened this morning in Aalesund.

First officer Geir Syversen, which was on the bridge at the time of the accident, will give evidence to the inquiry, as will fellow survivors Egil Atle Hafsaas and Per Jan Vike.

Syversen told Norwegian daily VG: "The capsize did not have anything to do with the vessel. The ship was brand new."

Trond Myklebust, the boss of Bourbon Offshore Norway, told this morning: "I explect that we will find some sort of explanation (for the incident). It will be good to hear what the crew say."

The Bourbon Dolphin sank on 15 April after capsizing on 12 April while carrying out routine anchor handling work with the semi-submersible rig Transocean Rather. Three of the 15-man crew are dead, five are still missing, presumed drowned. Seven survived.
