Gas exports to Italy from Libya's Mellitah complex are now expected to resume "in the next few days" after being halted at the weekend as defence forces were called in to break up rebel fighting.

Run by the Mellitah joint venture involving Libya’s national oil company and Italy’s Eni, Mellitah supplies Italy with gas through the Greenstream pipeline, which at full capacity pumps at least 8 billion cubic metres.

Mellitah chairman Abdulfattah Shagan, who visited the complex on Tuesday, said on Wednesday that gas and oil operations had resumed at its Wafa fields and the venture was preparing to resume offshore gas production at Bahr Al-Salam.

He said the venture would increase oil output at its Elephant field in southwestern Libya after having had to reduce production there and at Wafa by 25%.
