Guatemala has added an extra block to its planned bidding round, bringing the total number of blocks on offer to three.
Hydrocarbons Department director Jorge Silva told BNamericas that the new block on offer lies off Guatemala's Pacific coast, but declined to give further details of the round.
Silva added that bidding documents have been submitted to the Energy & Mines Ministry, which must authorise the launch of the round. However, a Cabinet reshuffle and a delay in naming a new minister has pushed back the round.
Ministry officials were not immediately available to comment on the bidding process, BNamericas said.
The onshore component of the planned round includes areas A1 and A9. A1 covers 102,000 hectares and has a resources estimate of betweem 374 and 765 million barrels of oil. A9 covers 107,000 hectares and has reserves estimated at betweem 460 million and 1.07 billion barrels, according to preliminary information.
The exploration and production contracts would run for 25 years.
Company US Oil Guatemala and UK player Taghmen Energy's local subsidiary PetroLatina are already operating in Guatemala.
