Drilling sprint: by Statoil at Sverdrup

Statoil is pushing to drill another appraisal on the Johan Sverdrup discovery off Norway as soon as the rig is finished with an ongoing wildcat in the area after getting the final official clearance for the probe.

The Norwegian state oil company has secured a drilling permit from the authorities to drill the 16/2-17S appraisal on the Sverdrup fault margin in its operated production licence 265.

It intends to use the same rig, semi-submersible Ocean Vanguard, that has struck oil pay with an exploration well in adjoining licence PL502, apparently proving an extension of the giant find.

Drilling of the ongoing well, which kicked off around 20 February, is expected to take about 36 days.
