Funeral arrangements: world watching as Hugo Chavez funeral set for Friday

World leaders and thousands of mourners are gathering in the Venezuelan capital Caracas ahead of the state funeral of former president Hugo Chavez who died earlier this week.

In what could be seen as an attempt by ruling authorities to keep the oil-rich state on a socialist path, the enigmatic ex-leader’s body is to be embalmed and placed on display indefinitely.

Chavez lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday, eventually succumbing to a massive heart attack in a Caracas hospital. As he was re-elected in October for another term in office, the country is due to hold another snap election soon to choose a successor.
